Stonington Volunteer Fire Company
Dear Members & Neighbors
The time has come once again for our annual fund drive. We would like to thank the entire community for all the monetary donations, thank you notes, and the words of encouragement spoken directly to our first responders, they are greatly appreciated. Thanks to your generosity the 2024 fund drive campaign brought in over $20,000! In 2024 we responded to 258 incidents. Responding to these incidents translate into thousands of firefighter, fire police and equipment hours. This does not include hundreds of hours spend on training and fund raising events.
How does your money get spent? Monies are used for upkeep on building and grounds, maintaining firefighting equipment and apparatus, replacing expired equipment and as firefighting technology advances we must replace outdated equipment. With newer and safer equipment, we can serve the community better and reduce loss of life and property. Also in recent years we’ve been trying to keep up with computer technology. We have 100% wifi access throughout the facility. Large screen monitors have been mounted in the truck bays that when a call comes in they show the location of the call on a map and a list of personnel who are responding to the station. This helps the driver of the apparatus determine if he should respond with limited personnel or wait for additional personnel to arrive at the station.
We have started our search to replace Engine 631 a 1999 American La France. A committee has been formed to explore what features are needed on a replacement engine. The committee has met with a representative from a manufacturer to gather preliminary specifications. What is the timeline and how much will this project cost? If we decide to purchase new, most manufacturers have a three year delivery date and the price tag would be between $850,000 and $900,000. If we find a used piece of apparatus the timeline would be much shorter and the price could be between $500,000 and $600,000…maybe higher. The problem is finding the right piece of used apparatus to fit our needs as a rural fire company. If you would like your contribution to go directly to the “Truck Fund” please designate on the memo line of your check.
We apply for grants annually, from all levels of government, in efforts to offset our expenditures. Sad to say we do not get awarded these grants as often as we’d like. That’s why we reach out to you, our friends and neighbors, annually asking for your help. The ongoing support we receive from the community, year after year, shows that we are not only providing a needed service but a service supported by those we serve. Of all the fund-raising projects we do, this fund drive brings in the most revenue and funds almost half of our annual budget. So your annual donation plays a vital part in keeping the station in operation.
